We are thrilled that our 6th Annual Financial Capability Conference, held on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Rhode Island College, was a big success again this year. Our theme was “Taking You on a Graduated Approach to Financial Capability — From Elementary to Postsecondary” with a new series of workshops conducted by national curriculum developers and researchers in the financial education space.
More than 130 K-16 educators attended the free, day-long conference, gaining more confidence in their content knowledge and immediate access to financial education resources. Throughout the day, participants interacted with exhibitors, experienced our FinLit Game and Resource Room, and “earned” opportunities to enter into our end-of-day prize drawings. High school and college students served as volunteers, and offered their voices about the need for financial education in schools today.
Distinguished speakers included Senator Jack Reed (by video), Congressman Jim Langevin,Treasurer Seth Magaziner, Commissioner Angelica Infante-Green, Gary Mottola, Rick Metters, and Bill Cheeks. Their talks provided inspiration and valuable information to participants about the state of financial literacy in our state, region, and country.

Gary Mottola, FINRA Investor Education Foundation, shared the following remarks:
“I recently had the honor to attend and present at the 6th Annual Financial Capability Conference organized by the Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy. I was very impressed by the quality and organization of the event. It was clear to me that the RI Jump$tart Coalition enjoys great support and involvement from multiple stakeholders at the state level. There were attendees from the business, academic and teaching communities–including representatives of the state legislature, the Commissioner of Education, and the General Treasurer attending the conference. The RI Jump$tart Coalition appears to be doing a wonderful job spreading financial literacy across the State of Rhode Island.”
Thanks to our many conference sponsors, with special recognition to our Platinum Sponsor Fidelity Investments, and to our Gold Sponsors Pawtucket Credit Union, NextGen Personal Finance, RISLA, Freedoms Foundation, Rhode Island College, and Bridgewater State University, for generously supporting our annual conference. We look forward to working with our partners to plan our 7th annual conference in 2020!
